Nothing to fear, but fear itself –
Until it calls your name.
It creeps in silent, masked in stealth,
Then fills your heart with shame.
It twists your thoughts till all you see –
A ghost that points his blame.
The ghost speaks soft of those who’ve shined,
Of ones you see stand tall –
Their light so bright that you’re maligned.
I feel so frail and small.
A shadow falls from this great beast,
And wraps me in its pall.
It lurks beneath my bed at night,
Or hides within my gloom –
The doubts take root and grow in might.
Self-spite will carve my tomb.
You scream inside, Release me now!
Those words – fear will consume.
Can I find peace in truth that’s strong –
Above my qualms’ shrill voice?
My mirror insists – I am wrong,
The scorn denies my choice.
Self-worth is found beyond this realm,
In faith I shall rejoice.
“Look to others, and you’re distressed” –
Ten Boom once bravely said.
“Look to yourself, you’ll be depressed” –
Through trials she was led.
“Instead look to God – to be at rest!”
Through Him spent souls are fed.
Don’t look to others for your gauge –
But look to God instead.
